Whether you know her as the Swamp Princess or Miss D-O-E, there’s no denying nobody dominates like Doechii. We’re not just talking Grammy wins. The Tampa artist knows a thing or two about creating an ensemble with depth. Today we’ll try to get to the bottom of what makes Doechii’s style so captivating.
Doechii plays into androgyny, mixing traditionally masculine elements like collard shirts and ties with feminine pieces like skirts and glam makeup. In recent months she's tended to stick to blues, grays, browns, and greens. We know she’s inspired by Jay Z’s evolution from casual attire to suits. This brought a sophistication to rap which propelled Doechii to seriously study the genre. Hence the academic look that makes her instantly recognizable.
Doechii's no stranger to stirring conversation. Back in November, her face tape was a topic of discourse in the fashion community. While many were confused at the display, we commend her authenticity. The look strips back the layers of cosmetic augmentation. It's raw, it's real, and this is why we love her.

“Everything about my life right now is embodying and owning what I have overcome, and not feeling guilty and showing up dramatically in celebration all the time because I have a reason to celebrate”
It’s clear Doechii has a keen eye for layering, color, tailoring and silhouette, I don’t think this is the root of her impeccable style. Doechii’s magnetism lays in how larger than life she is. She takes what lives inside of us– the anxieties, debaucheries, and passions– and manifests it into her look and sound.

The reason Doechii resonates with our culture is because she represents the empowered new generation. How often does our society speak ill of Gen Z and Millennials? We’re lazy, we’re unmotivated, we’re directionless. In reality, the majority of us are incredibly determined, resilient, and hopeful. It’s a message as old as time, but Doechii’s call for us to follow our craziest dreams, despite the naysayers, is the light we all need during this time.
If we got to style the star, we'd put her in the Zaire Top and the Jules skirt; the Zaire Top having movement and a unique touch while the Jules skirt is structured, utilitarian, and multi-purpose. The Alohas loafers also add a scholarly touch. I'd also throw the Kenz Jacket on her for good measure.
Another round of congratulations for your big win, Doechii. Hellbent is rooting for you!
