Olympic Style: How the Games Are Shaping Fashion

Olympic Style: How the Games Are Shaping Fashion

From Vogue’s World Runway show to the jaw-dropping Opening Ceremony uniforms, this year’s Summer Olympics have proved fashion and sports go together better than one may think.

For designers, the Olympics are prime-time to showcase their talent to a broader audience. Over decades, designers like Roy Halston, Henry Grethtel, and Ralph Lauren have achieved commercial success by innovating U.S. sportswear, and releasing similar collections to the public. During this time, designers take their experiments to new levels, as well. Like in 2018, when Armani unveiled Italy’s official uniforms from recycled tricot polyester.

The influence of the Olympics is undeniable as it seeps into our everyday wear. But how will the games influence trends and production going forward?

Skin-Tight & Lightweights

In celebration of the human form, it’s natural that skin-tight pieces remain a staple in many of our closets. Lightweight materials that contour to the body will surge in demand. For this trend, look no further than Skims’ recent release of bodysuits and bodycon pieces.

Wearable Tech

As wearable tech for athletic performance becomes more prevalent, our athleisure could start to resemble a sci-fi movie. If that seems far-fetched, consider how Apple watches and Oura rings have all but replaced traditional wristwear and rings. Brands like Levi’s and Ralph Lauren have already invested in wearable tech. Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket  allows the wearer to receive phone calls, check the weather, and control their phone from the sleeve cuff. Ralph Lauren created a Polotech shirt capable of reading your biometrics and introduced their Cooling System jacket during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Recycled Materials & Sustainability

As consumer expectations for durable garments rise, companies may turn to advanced synthetic textiles. We may see a shift towards materials like nylon and spandex, designed to withstand harsh weather and rigorous performance. Expect a boom of recycled fibers like polyamide and nylon. At this year’s Summer Games, Ralph Lauren showcased 100% recycled cotton polo as the official Team USA uniform, with other pieces in the collection including recycled polyester and certified wool.
